Strategy for Completing Westbound I-70 Mountain Express Lane Project

Subject: Strategy for completing Westbound I-70 Mountain Express Lane project

The Westbound I-70 Mountain Express Lane project team wants you to be aware of a recently approved strategy for completing road work in the coming weeks and opening the Express Lane for testing by end of this year.

Yesterday, the Colorado Department of Transportation executive management gave the go-ahead to extend hours for single lane closures along westbound I-70, with the goal of completing asphalt paving to open the Westbound Express Lane for testing by the end of this year.

The attached slides (CLICK HERE) provide full details, but the most significant change in the lane closure strategy is that starting next week, single lane closures will occur along westbound I-70 as early as 1 p.m. Mondays through Wednesdays and 5 p.m. on Thursdays. While these lane closures might be set in various locations between the Veterans Memorial Tunnels and Empire Interchange, most construction activity will be focused in Idaho Springs between Mile Points 242 and 239.

Daytime single-lane closures on westbound I-70

Drivers can expect up to 30 -minute delays, with the heaviest delays between 1 and 4 p.m. Motorists are advised to adjust their travel plans on the westbound corridor to the morning hours when both lanes are open.

These extended closure hours allow crews to do final asphalt paving work when temperatures are warmer.

Westbound I-70 traffic volumes historically decline in the weeks between the change in fall foliage and the start of ski season – a major reason CDOT waited until now to enact these extended closures. While daytime closures aren’t popular with drivers, the tradeoff is having the Westbound Express Lane open in time for this ski season and delivering a safer, more reliable travel experience. Along with improving travel times into the High Country this winter, finishing the road work this year will provide some relief to Clear Creek County residents and businesses.

Eastbound I-70 traffic shift at Idaho Springs

There will also be a new traffic shift on eastbound I-70 near Mile Point 240 in Idaho Springs scheduled to begin Monday night, Oct. 12.  Motorists traveling eastbound will be driving in narrow lanes between temporary concrete barriers.  We urge motorists to heed the speed limit, drive with care, stay in their lane, and be extra vigilant through the work zone.

Eastbound Express Lane closure

The eastbound I-70 Express Lane will close for construction activities starting Sunday night, Oct. 11, until Nov. 13.  The lane will be reopened for tolling use on Nov. 13, or earlier if traffic volumes warrant.

Weekend lane closures

Because traffic volumes are still relatively high during the evening hours on the weekend, CDOT is pushing back westbound single lane closures on Fridays from 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturdays from 4 to 7 p.m.

Again, refer to the attached slides for full details on the westbound lane closures and the upcoming eastbound shift near Mile Point 240.
